  17. This Read Me file contains installation instructions and product
  18. information for the Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 Beta 1 for Microsoft 
  19. Windows 3.1, Microsoft Windows 95, and Microsoft Windows NT.

  22. name "Amber".]

  28. This Acrobat Reader is a pre release version, does not 
  29. represent final product from Adobe, and may contain bugs, errors 
  30. and other problems that could cause system failures.

  33. This pre-release version of Adobe Acrobat Reader will expire on 
  34. September 30, 1996.

  37. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  38. ===================
  39. - minimum 386-based personal computer (486, Pentium, or Pentium Pro
  40.   recommended)
  41. - Microsoft Windows 3.1, Microsoft Windows for Workgroups,
  42.   Microsoft Windows 95, or Microsoft Windows NT 3.51
  43. - 4 MB application RAM
  44. - 4 MB hard disk space, plus 2 MB temporary space available during 
  45.   installation
  46. - For web integration, Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later or any 
  47.   other application that FULLY supports the Netscape APIs.

  50. INSTALLING ACROBAT READER
  51. =========================
  52. To install the 32-bit Acrobat Reader (called VIEWER32.EXE) for use
  53. ONLY with Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT 3.51: 
  54.  
  55. + Download the installer READ32B1.EXE to a temporary 
  56.   location on your hard drive (e.g. C:\TEMP).
  57. + Double-click the installer file.
  58. + The file will expand the installation files into the temp 
  59.   directory and automatically start the installer program.
  60. + Follow the instructions on your screen.
  61. + Installation requires approximately 3 MB of free hard disk space
  62.  
  63. If installer is unable to install the plugin necessary for Acrobat
  64. to communicate with a Netscape-compatible web browser, you'll see
  65. the following installer message:
  66.  
  67. "Acrobat Reader is not able to locate your Internet browser.
  68. Please enter the plugin directory for your Netscape(R) compatible
  69. Internet browser."
  70.  
  71. + Enter a path name in the dialog (or use the path provided to the 
  72.   Reader directory).  This is where the Netscape plugin NPPDF32.DLL 
  73.   will be installed.
  74. + If you did not enter the path to your browser's plugin directory,
  75.   after installation is complete copy NPPDF32.DLL to
  76.   \Netscape\Navigator\Program\plugins or to the plugins directory 
  77.   of another Netscape 2.x compatible browser.

  80. To install the 16-bit Acrobat Reader (called VIEWER.EXE) for use 
  81. ONLY with Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Microsoft Windows for 
  82. Workgroups:

  84. + Download the archive file READ16B1.EXE to a temporary location  
  85.   on your hard drive (e.g. C:\TEMP). 
  86. + Double-click READ16B1.EXE
  87. + The following files will be placed in the temp directory:
  88.     _inst16.ex_     
  89.     _setup.dll
  90.     _setup.lib
  91.     acroinst.ini
  92.     archive.z
  93.     setup.exe
  94.     setup.ins
  95.     setup.pkg
  96. + Double-click the installer file SETUP.EXE.
  97. + Follow the instructions on your screen.

  130. VIEWING PDF PAGE-AT-A-TIME OVER THE WEB
  131. =======================================
  132. Best viewing performance for PDF documents over the Web comes from
  133. optimized PDF files and a server with the ability to byteserve the
  134. files. We have provided a set of demonstration files on Adobe's server
  135. to allow you to try the page-at-a-time performance for yourself. See
  136. http://www.adobe.com/acrobat/3beta/amexamp.html for examples.

  138. Any non-optimized PDF file can be viewed in the Netscape window (without
  139. page-at-a-time display) with the Acrobat Reader 3.0b1 and Netscape 
  140. Navigator version 2.0 or better.

  143. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  144. ================
  145. Known problems in Acrobat Reader 3.0B1 include:
  146.  
  147. You may encounter problems when attempting to view files larger 
  148. than 4 Mb from within a Web browser.
  149.  
  150. This release of VIEWER32.EXE is not fully compatible with
  151. Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 beta.
  152.  
  153. On Windows 95 and Windows NT, double clicking on a pdf document in the
  154. File Manager doesn't open the document when Acrobat Reader 3.0b1 is
  155. open.  You can still open the file from within the Acrobat Reader.
